Fra Storia e Modernità Overview

First Impressions

Fra Storia e Modernità sits on Viale Tunisia in what’s honestly one of Milan‘s most practical neighborhoods — you’re basically a stone’s throw from Centrale station, which means you can stumble off the train and be checking in within minutes. The name translates to “Between History and Modernity,” and I get why they chose it. The building itself has this interesting blend where classic Milanese architecture meets contemporary design touches that actually work together.

Location Reality Check

Look, Stazione Centrale isn’t the most glamorous area, but it’s incredibly functional. You’ve got the metro right there, buses everywhere, and honestly? Some of the best cheap eats in the city are within walking distance. The Corso Buenos Aires shopping strip is close enough that you can easily walk over when you need retail therapy. I mean, you’re not staying in the historic center, but the trade-off is that this four-star place costs significantly less than comparable hotels in Brera or near the Duomo.

The Rooms

The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed — they’ve maximized every inch without making it feel cramped. The bed was genuinely comfortable, and the air conditioning worked well (crucial during Milan’s sticky summers). What impressed me was the attention to soundproofing; despite being near a major train station, I barely heard any noise at night. The bathroom was modern with a decent shower, though don’t expect a bathtub.

Practical Perks

There’s a small restaurant on-site that serves solid Italian basics — nothing revolutionary, but the pasta was properly al dente and the prices were reasonable for hotel dining. The staff speaks decent English and they’re genuinely helpful with directions and recommendations. I appreciated that they offered parking nearby (for a fee), which is actually pretty valuable in this part of Milan where street parking is a nightmare.

Why Guests Love It

You know what makes this place work? It doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. Fra Storia e Modernità delivers exactly what business travelers and smart tourists need: clean, comfortable accommodations with good transport links and fair pricing. The 8.2 rating reflects this — guests appreciate getting solid value without unnecessary frills. If you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring Milan rather than lounging in your hotel, this spot gives you a reliable base without breaking the bank.

Reviews of Fra Storia e Modernità

  • Quirky equipped apartment, perfect for those interested in history. Wonderful location. – Elaine from United Kingdom – 6 September 2025 (9/10)

We had a bit of a mix up with not being able to pick up the keys, but the owner was very helpful in resolving this and we were in the apartment before too long. It's a brilliant piece of history the apartment, quirky, unique and very well presented. All clean and tidy and had pretty much everything you could want. The dishwasher is a bonus. Location was brilliant, very pleasant walk into city centre and the tourist areas, very close to metro and the wider train network. We chose to train a train to Lake Como on one of the days that the apartment was brilliantly located to facilitate that.

What could be improved: I would have preferred two sets of keys as the property can sleep at least 5 people, so one set of keys became a bit of an issue for us. I would also like to see a folder which described how things work and how to reset them if required including guidance on the recycling, what to put where. Out of interest, I would also suggest maybe a bit of documented history of the apartment, it clearly was used as a shelter during the war and this is a true asset to the apartment that should be celebrated.

  • A very cool hideaway in a convenient location – Adriana from Netherlands – 27 July 2025 (9/10)

This is a really cool (in both senses) hideaway just outside of the busy bits of Milan. The bombshelter vibe is very special and because you are partially below ground, it keeps nice and cool in the warm Italian summer. It has everything you need, and is clean. Also industrial art made from bicycle parts and funky prints make this a special spot. Not your standard run of the mill apartment!

What could be improved: On particularly hot weekendnights, the bedrooms that are adjacent to the street can get some noise from people standing outside the bar. However, we then found that the accommodation has taken particular measures to counter this, with soundproof shutters and even a bowl of earplugs. Much appreciated. And there is always the option to go upstairs and join in the fun.

  • Good – Julienne from Australia – 22 July 2025 (7/10)

What could be improved: There is a nightclub above which went until 4.30am one morning. Very loud thumping music. The host has done everything possible to alleviate sound, like installing heavy shutters and reporting to the Police etc. Carola the host is also very quick to communicate (via Whattsapp) and is helpful. But the noise was bad, particularly as we arrived in the height of summer – with everyone wanting to be outside and socialising. The location would be great for a couple who could sleep in the main bedroom unaffected by the noise, but the other two bedrooms are exposed to the nightclub noise. I really hope Carola the host can come to some agreement with the nightclub as it was a great location and a really funky apartment.

  • Lovely stay – little loud at night – Tina from United States – 14 June 2025 (9/10)

The apartment was very clean and well furnished. Love that it is close to the ATM, grocery stores, and plenty of restaurants. The 3 separate bedrooms were a plus!

We also got a kick out of the vault doors. We visited during a hot spell and the apartment was comfortably cool.

What could be improved: The bar upstairs closes very late (almost 5 am on a Friday night/Sat AM) and is rather loud. Even with the furnished earplugs, my teenage children had trouble sleeping.

  • Superb – Mike from United Kingdom – 6 May 2025 (9/10)

    Interesting decor

What could be improved: Noise from bar at front

  • Great vale for money- we enjoyed our stay! – Jennifer from Australia – 18 September 2024 (9/10)

We really enjoyed the character and decor of the property. It’s in a great location , handy to list of restaurants we needed more time to sample, also an easy tram ride to sights like the Duomo. Carolina was really helpful and very responsive

What could be improved: the noise from the bar next door on the Fri and Sat night was loud but we had earplugs which helped

  • Superb – Rami from Jordan – 17 August 2024 (9/10)

Location so convenient, and house manager Carolina was really a very friendly person who gave us so many tips and help

  • Comfortable, cozy and convenient – Natalie from Australia – 11 December 2023 (9/10)

    Location, facilities

What could be improved: A little noisy with trams and lack of hot water

  • Very good – Debbie from Canada – 10 August 2023 (8/10)

    Very clean and quirky

What could be improved: Lots of noise from the bar next door

  • Good. Just a shame that the night we were there it was very noisy – Anne from United Kingdom – 2 July 2023 (8/10)

The owner has renovated this property immaculately. Lovely apartment.

What could be improved: The noise. From karaoke bar and trams
