La Formaggeria del Naviglio Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to La Formaggeria del Naviglio on Via Ascanio Sforza, you immediately get that this isn’t your typical chain hotel. The name gives it away — this four-star boutique property has serious cheese credentials, and honestly, that’s what makes it so charming. The building sits right in the heart of the Navigli district, where you can hear the gentle buzz of canal-side life just outside your window. I mean, when couples consistently rate a place this highly, you know there’s something special going on.
The Navigli Neighborhood
You know what’s brilliant about staying here? You’re literally steps from Milan‘s most atmospheric canals, designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself — though let’s be honest, most guests are more interested in the aperitivo scene than the engineering history. The Navigli area transforms completely from day to night, starting as a quiet residential zone and morphing into Milan’s premier nightlife destination. During the day, you can stroll along the waterways and pop into vintage shops, but come evening, the canal banks fill with locals sipping Negronis at outdoor tables. The metro isn’t far either, so getting to the Duomo or shopping districts takes maybe 15 minutes.
Your Room Experience
The rooms here actually feel like someone’s well-appointed Milan apartment rather than a sterile hotel space. Each room has its own personality — some overlook the canal, others face the quieter courtyard side. The design leans into that Italian flair for mixing modern comfort with traditional touches, and you’ll find thoughtful details like local artisan soaps and quality linens. What I really appreciated was the soundproofing; even with the Navigli’s evening energy happening below, you can get a proper night’s sleep when you need it.
Food and Dining
Here’s where La Formaggeria del Naviglio really shines — the cheese connection isn’t just marketing fluff. The property’s restaurant takes Italian cheese culture seriously, offering tastings and pairings that go way beyond your typical hotel breakfast spread. They source from local producers and actually know their stuff, so if you’re into food, this becomes more than just a place to sleep. The breakfast setup includes some exceptional local cheeses and cured meats, plus they’ll point you toward the best nearby spots for dinner — which matters in a neighborhood packed with tourist traps alongside genuine gems.
Why Guests Love It
The location feedback speaks for itself — couples especially gravitate here because it strikes that perfect balance between romantic canal views and easy access to Milan’s energy. Recent guests consistently mention the top-notch location, and after staying here, I get why. You’re close enough to walk to major attractions but far enough from the crowds to feel like you’re experiencing the real Milan. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood and will steer you toward hidden wine bars or the best gelato spots that locals actually frequent. It’s that kind of insider knowledge that transforms a good trip into a memorable one.

Reviews of La Formaggeria del Naviglio
Very good – Holásek from Slovakia – 12 July 2025 (8/10)
The stay was nice close to the metro and tram stops, a lot of restaurants in the area, the room was quite big, there was also a club close by but we didn't hear it in the night so it was nice and quiet, the apartment had everything we needed.
What could be improved: The bed was a bit smallVery good – Renata from Slovakia – 8 July 2025 (8/10)
Smaller apartment but very cozy, in a great location in a quiet place and yet a step away from the busy Navigli, restaurants, cafes and transport (trams and subway). The kitchen is also equipped with basic food for cooking, which we did not use.
What could be improved: We would definitely welcome wifi (this info was in
the description but I overlooked it).
The repellent is a necessary equipment in this area :).Exceptional – Yilmaz from United Kingdom – 31 May 2025 (10/10)
İt is a little hidden gem, the courtyard is amazing, so peaceful. The location was great, close to tram lines for easy transport
Wonderful, cute, quiet and perfect location – Tanya from United States – 14 April 2025 (10/10)
Very easy to get in and it was absolutely perfect for me to visit my daughter living at Bocconi University..just a short walk away. Super clean, had everything I needed, very very quiet. The courtyard was beautiful to walk thru each day. Very easy to walk over a couple blocks to shopping, catch the tram, groceries. Every thing was close by. I even walked all the way to the Duomo a couple of times to shop along the way.
What could be improved: It was missing a cork screw to open wine, so I had to buy one the second day. Wifi was not too good, so I had to hot spot.Good – Dominion from Nigeria – 6 September 2024 (7/10)
The location appeared to be a centre for tourism with numerous restaurants at night.
What could be improved: 1). You had to bend low at the entry gate.
2). No air conditioner in the apartment.
3). The only standing fan had an unstable rotating head.
4). Opening the only window for ventilation gave access for mosquitoes to come in.
5). The bathing shower had the hot part regulated & intermittent, so a warm shower as desired was impossible.
6). No washing machine & no bucket/ container available as alternative for laundry.Very good – Cernatbogdan from Romania – 8 August 2024 (8/10)
Great facilities. I had everything we needed.
What could be improved: It requires windows mosquito nets because you can't sleep with the windows open and it gets very hot in the summer.the location is amazing! with a lot of restaurants. – Rotem from Israel – 1 July 2024 (10/10)
The host was very nice and flexible. he gave us a late check out without an extra charge! the location is amazing! with a lot of restaurants.
What could be improved: the room is with no AC only with a fan.Amazing!! – Calum from Ireland – 7 June 2024 (10/10)
The location was absolutely amazing, the apartment is situated within a beautiful courtyard in a vibrant location. There is a strip of gorgeous bars situated along the canal just a short walk away from the apartment. I couldn’t have asked for a better greeting and introduction to the apartment and it’s facilities, which made our stay all the more enjoyable. When returning to Milan I couldn’t possibly think of anywhere else I’d book, and I can’t wait to plan my next trip to Naviglio!
Such an amazing stay at such an amazing place! – Ralitsa from Bulgaria – 16 May 2024 (10/10)
The property was exceptionally clean and in such a great location. It was easy to access and has a lot of great restaurants and cafes all around it. Would love to visit again!
What could be improved: Nothing at all. Everything was great.Very good – Loronet from Switzerland – 16 November 2023 (8/10)
Very good location, close to bars and restaurant, in a very lively neighborhood. Nice staff. Very quiet area. Good basic equipment and very clean room.
What could be improved: Room has no view, which is okay for a short stay but could be less enjoyable for a long stay.
