First Impressions

Walking up to PrimoPiano – Ripa, you’ll notice it doesn’t scream for attention like some of the flashier places around Navigli. It’s tucked into a converted building on Ripa di Porta Ticinese, and honestly, that’s part of its charm. The entrance feels more like stepping into someone’s stylish apartment building than a traditional hotel — which makes sense, because that’s basically what it is.

The Neighborhood Experience

You’re right in the heart of Navigli here, and I mean really in it. Step outside and you’re literally surrounded by the canal-side bars and restaurants that make this area so popular with locals and visitors alike. The Darsena is a five-minute walk, and you know what? That matters because this is where Milan comes alive after dark. During the day, you can wander along the canals or grab a coffee at one of the many spots that line the water.

The Apartment Setup

Here’s where PrimoPiano – Ripa gets interesting — you’re not getting a standard hotel room here. Each unit is more like a small apartment with its own character. The one I stayed in had a compact but functional kitchenette (nothing fancy, but perfect for morning coffee or storing leftovers from the incredible restaurants downstairs). The design feels contemporary without trying too hard, and the windows let in plenty of natural light during the day.

What Works Well

For a three-star place, the attention to detail surprised me. The Wi-Fi actually works reliably, which isn’t always a given in older Milan buildings. The staff knows the neighborhood inside and out — they’ll point you toward the better aperitivo spots and away from the tourist traps. Parking isn’t included, but honestly, you don’t need a car here anyway with the metro and trams so accessible.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is the balance it strikes between being part of the Navigli scene without being overwhelmed by it. You’re close enough to stumble home from dinner, but the building itself stays quiet enough for decent sleep. The price point makes sense too — you’re paying for location and independence rather than hotel services you might not even use. It’s perfect if you want to live like a local for a few days rather than just passing through Milan as another tourist.

  What could be improved: Very noisy at night, was ok with earplugs. Bed mattress wasn’t the best. Checking in wasn’t a very easy process as the intercom was not working for us.

  The apartment was compact but had everything you needed. From cooking facilities to clothes washing, iron, hair dryer,. hosts had thought of everything you may need. It was easy to check in. It was clean and comfortable. The bed is on a mezzanine level but that didn't cause a problem for us. More than enough room for 2 people. Access to the apartment was right off the canal side where all the restaurants and bars were but you could not hear noise from the apartment. The location was perfect.
  Within short walking distance of trams, metro and taxi rank. Brilliant location to travel out from.
  
  What could be improved: The mosquitos were a pain when on the canal side and I became their main food source. I recommend you go fully prepared with bug repellent after sun, big spray and mosquito bands.

  Location is quite popular and fancy, but if you looking for quiet place, it is not here, loud bars are all around and till 1 or 2 am there will be noise.

  What could be improved: The taps had to be tightened with a towel so that they wouldn't drip, the general condition of the apartment needed refreshing, and from what I understand, this is a chain of apartments, not an individual tenant, so a small investment in renovation and plumbing would be advisable.
