First Impressions

Hotel Rio sits right on Via Giuseppe Mazzini, which honestly caught me off guard — I wasn’t expecting a three-star place to land such prime real estate in Milan‘s city center. The building has that classic Milanese facade that blends right into the neighborhood, nothing flashy but definitely solid. You know what I mean — it’s the kind of place that looks like it’s been part of the street for decades.

Location & Getting Around

Here’s the thing about staying on Mazzini — you’re basically in the heart of everything without the chaos of being right on top of the Duomo. I could walk to La Scala in about eight minutes, and the main shopping district is literally around the corner. The Duomo metro station is close enough that you don’t think twice about hopping on, but far enough that you’re not dealing with tourist crowds every time you step outside.

The Room Experience

My room was smaller than I expected — this is Milan, after all — but everything worked well and felt clean. The AC actually cooled things down (not always a given in older Italian hotels), and the bathroom was recently updated. I mean, you’re not getting marble countertops or anything fancy, but the shower pressure was decent and the toiletries didn’t smell like industrial cleaner.

Neighborhood Life

What I really appreciated was how the hotel sits in an actual neighborhood rather than a tourist bubble. There’s a great little restaurant two doors down that serves proper Milanese risotto — the kind of place where locals actually eat dinner. The morning routine felt authentic too, with people heading to work and the usual Italian coffee culture happening right outside your window. You get that real Milan vibe without having to venture far from your base.

Look, Hotel Rio isn’t going to wow you with amenities or Instagram-worthy interiors. But it does something more valuable — it puts you right where you want to be in Milan without breaking the bank. The staff actually knows the area and can point you toward the good stuff, not just the obvious tourist spots. For a three-star in this location, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for without any unpleasant surprises.

  Very good location, 1 min walk to the Duomo and located near many shops and restaurants. The room was quite small but the bathroom was large. Breakfast had ok selection.

  The location was awesome. Around the corner from the Duomo and so close to the Metro. The metro is really easy to use. There is a nice nearby restaurant called Dogana where you can get a 10% discount if you give them a business card from the Hotel Rio. The breakfast was nice.
