Santarella Guest House Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Santarella Guest House on Viale Monte Nero, you’ll notice it has that understated Milan elegance — no flashy signs or marble lobbies, just a beautifully restored building that fits perfectly into this residential corner of the city center. The entrance feels more like stepping into a stylish friend’s home than a typical hotel, which honestly sets the tone for everything else. You know what? That’s exactly what makes this four-star property special.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s the thing about this spot in Milan — you’re actually in one of those neighborhoods where locals live and work, not just where tourists take photos. Viale Monte Nero runs through Porta Romana, which means you can walk to the Navigli canals for dinner (about 15 minutes) or catch the yellow line metro to the Duomo in just a few stops. The area has that authentic Milan vibe with corner bars serving proper espresso and small groceries where the owners remember your face.
The Space
Each room feels thoughtfully designed rather than cookie-cutter corporate — think warm wood floors, quality linens, and those little touches like good lighting for reading in bed. The bathrooms are compact but well-planned, with rainfall showers that actually have decent water pressure (not always a given in historic Milan buildings). What I really appreciated was the attention to soundproofing — you’re not hearing every conversation in the hallway or street noise at night.
Breakfast & Amenities
The morning spread isn’t massive, but it’s done right — fresh pastries from a local bakery, proper Italian coffee, and they actually have decent options if you’re not into the typical sweet Italian breakfast. There’s a small communal area where you can grab coffee throughout the day, and the staff genuinely knows the neighborhood well enough to point you toward that hidden restaurant or the best aperitivo spot nearby. They’ve got parking available too, which is honestly a relief if you’re driving in Milan.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Santarella Guest House works because it doesn’t try too hard to be something it’s not. The 9.3 rating makes sense when you experience how smoothly everything runs — from check-in to the way housekeeping somehow never interrupts your day but always keeps things spotless. It’s the kind of place where business travelers feel comfortable getting work done, but couples also find it romantic enough for a city break. The staff strikes that perfect balance of being helpful without hovering, and they clearly take pride in what they’ve created here.

Reviews of Santarella Guest House
Excellent – Thomas from United States – 1 December 2025 (10/10)
Bed was super comfortable. It was quiet and the decor is so warm and cozy. Highly recommend
We definitely recommend this place, and we’d absolutely choose it again the next time we visit. – Gizem from Turkey – 29 October 2025 (10/10)
The location was great, and the room and bathroom were spacious and clean. The staff were very helpful with our questions. There were small treats, and yogurt, orange juice, and water in the fridge. These little details may seem small, but they make a difference. Even the weather was cold, the room was always warm. The neighborhood offered a nice variety of restaurants too, more local than touristy.
What could be improved: The only thing to note is that the tram passes right next to the building, so you can hear it quite clearly. It didn’t bother us, but it might be an issue for light sleepers.Excellent Boutique Hotel, Great Location, Lovely Staff – George from United Kingdom – 28 October 2025 (9/10)
This is an excellent boutique type hotel located in a nice neighbourhood about ten minute walk to the Duomo/Galleria Vittorio and other sites, so really handy and accessible. Just over 20 euros for taxi from airport to the door. We found the room really quiet and despite this being a vibrant area with restaurants, cafes and a bar in the general area it was really good. The room was spacious, there are some basics (juice, yoghurt, coffee and water) provided daily and for additional breakfast needs there is a really excellent gluten free bakery next door which is perfect – excellent produce and good prices at bakery, its very busy which is obviously a good indicator. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful and provided a great list of different restaurants in the area. There is a tram stop 2 minutes away which covers Milano Centrale and other key sites, a 3-4 minute walk to another tram line takes you to the area of the Navigli Canals and the opposite direction the City Centre and ultimately San Siro (35 minutes or so). Would happily stay here again and recommend.
What could be improved: No issues.Nice, small hotel and excellent landing spot for a 3-day Milan experience – Leslie from Germany – 23 October 2025 (8/10)
Quiet rooms on the top (3rd) floor. Comfy beds and a good shower with both a rain shower and a hand-held shower head. The tram runs right in front of the hotel and we heard nothing in the room. There's also a bar on the corner that was packed on Saturday night, but we heard nothing of that in the room, either. It was October, so we did have the windows closed. But even if you're there in the summer, the room has good air conditioning, so outside noise shouldn't be a problem.
There are plenty of restaurants and bakeries in the area and a grocery store only 400 meters away.
We flew into Loreto Airport on the east side of the city and it was easy to get to the hotel via Metro and tram. The connection stops were mere meters away.
Tram stops are very close to the hotel, whether you want to go north/south into the city or east/west towards the airport or Navigli. About 6 stops/15 minutes to the Doumo and city center. Do yourself a favor and look for the official Metro website and get a pass for 1 or multiple days. There are other sites for the same thing, but the Metro's site is about 20 Euros cheaper on a 3-day pass. You can use all of the Metro subway trains, trams and busses in the city 24/7 with a pass, and you can get to within a block or two of pretty much anywhere you want to visit in the city.
Small fridge in the room with space for drinks and snacks.
Both of the gentlemen in the office were super friendly, super helpful. And when it rained one day of our trip, they generously provided us with umbrellas, which made the day much better. Housekeeping was friendly and came by daily to empty the garbage, make the bed and give us fresh towels.
What could be improved: Absolutely nothing major to register here. I do like the mental comfort of having a safe in my hotel room, but there was none here. I wore white socks while walking around the room and they got a bit dirty, so maybe running a wet mop rather than a dust mop over the tile a little more often. But all in all, very, very minor stuff. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat.Highly recommend, 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! – Judy from United States – 23 October 2025 (10/10)
Location was nice, easy to take tram to the Duomo which was our main focus. Nearby supermarket (Esselunga) and boulangerie was nice for getting some food/snacks/breakfast. Bed was extremely comfortable and the rooms were very nice. Our room even had a little balcony. Bathrooms were great too w lots of good amenities. Highly recommend this hotel 👍👍👍. We were 4 people and occupied 2 rooms.
BEST GUEST HOUSE IN MILAN – Anubhav from United Kingdom – 23 October 2025 (10/10)
Incredible location, easy check in, amazing communication by their team. I loved it so much, so clean, tidy , well decorated.
What could be improved: N/A (probably should have stayed there longer)Exceptional – I from Romania – 22 October 2025 (10/10)
The room was very clean and the location was really good
This was a reasonably priced place that was extremely clean, safe and in a great neighborhood. – Talar from United States – 20 October 2025 (9/10)
Access was simple using a personalized code to gain entry to the building. Then, that code worked at a kiosk to provide your room key. There was an elevator that was key card protected, and you still needed to climb some stairs to get to your room. The room was double key card protected, which helped me feel safe. The stairwells were monitored with cameras as well for safety. There isn't a lobby or doorman.
The room was very clean and there was a cleaning service every day. The bed and pillows were comfortable. They provided waters and yogurts, as well as shampoo, body wash and hair dryer. Internet was free and worked great.
The staff was very responsive every time I reached out for help with the air conditioning or borrowing an iron. Within minutes they responded to my Whatsapp text.
The location in Porta Romana is fantastic. Many restaurants and popular bars nearby, but the noise was never an issue in my room. There were many stops for the tram and bus system nearby, so getting around the city was quite easy.
This was a reasonably priced place that was extremely clean, safe and in a great neighborhood. I would recommend it.
What could be improved: There could have been more lighting in the stairwells, but I just used my phone flashlight for more.
The nespresso machine in my room made cold coffee, and I'm not sure if it was broken or user error.Great place to stay in Milan. – Daniel from Israel – 15 October 2025 (9/10)
The location is perfect, being within walking distance of the Doumo, and also near tram lines.
There are several places to eat nearby.
Automated check-in was great!
Nearby parking upon request.
What could be improved: The room was a little small, but big enough for us and our suitcases.Great base to explore Milan from. Tram at the front door made it easy to get around. – Allan from Australia – 14 October 2025 (9/10)
Clean comfortable well-appointed room. Good communication, easy access and great location.
