tHE Lantern Flat – Darsena Area Overview

First Impressions

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from tHE Lantern Flat – Darsena Area with that quirky capitalization, but this four-star spot in Milan turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises. The building sits on Via Sambuco, which sounds fancy but is actually just a quiet street that somehow manages to feel both residential and central at the same time. You know what struck me first? The entrance feels more like stepping into a stylish friend’s place than a typical hotel.

The Darsena Neighborhood

The location is actually brilliant — I mean, the Darsena area isn’t where most tourists end up, but that’s exactly why it works. You’re close enough to the Duomo and shopping districts (maybe a 15-minute walk), but you get to experience Milan like locals do. There’s this great aperitivo bar just around the corner that I stumbled upon, and honestly, the morning espresso ritual at the café next door became my daily highlight. The Navigli canals are right there too, which means evening strolls and weekend markets.

The Space

These aren’t traditional hotel rooms — they’re more like serviced apartments, which makes sense given the name. My room had this industrial-meets-cozy vibe with exposed brick and modern fixtures that somehow didn’t clash. The kitchenette was actually functional (rare in European city hotels), complete with a proper coffee machine and enough counter space to prepare a simple breakfast. What I loved most was the natural light — these old Milanese buildings have these wonderfully tall windows that make even compact spaces feel airy.

Practical Comfort

The Wi-Fi was solid, which matters when you’re trying to navigate Milan’s metro system or book dinner reservations. Air conditioning worked perfectly during my July stay (crucial detail that fellow travelers will appreciate). There’s no on-site restaurant, but honestly, that forces you to explore the neighborhood — and with Milan’s incredible food scene, that’s hardly a hardship. The front desk staff spoke excellent English and gave me restaurant recommendations that were spot-on, not just tourist traps.

Why Guests Love It

Look, this place won’t wow you with marble lobbies or concierge services, but it delivers exactly what you need for exploring Milan properly. The apartment-style setup means you can live like a local for a few days, and the Darsena location puts you in the heart of authentic Milanese life without the tourist crowds. At 8.4 rating, it’s clearly hitting the mark for people who want substance over flash. If you’re the type who’d rather discover that perfect little trattoria than eat at your hotel’s overpriced restaurant, this flat works beautifully.

Reviews of tHE Lantern Flat – Darsena Area

  • Location and ample apartment space to relax. – Vik from United Kingdom – 12 August 2025 (9/10)

Location, 5 min walk to Navigli, 20 min walk to Duomo, all local transport all on your doorstep. Apartment very spacious, two bathrooms, stress free mornings, ensured a great start to the day. Kitchen had all the mod cons. Host setup a WhatsApp, support was always available if required. Great stay, would definitely return again.

What could be improved: Only a minor, ensuite, couple of small steps to enter.

  • A roomy apartment perfect for a family. – Christine from Australia – 11 August 2025 (9/10)

Very close to Navigli with lots of restaurants and shops around. It was an easy 20 minute walk into the centre of Milan. It was a very comfortable apartment for our family of four people. The laundry facilities were a bonus.

What could be improved: There are stairs to climb, which was tricky with all of our bags. It was a bit noisy with the trams running outside.

  • Very good – Jackie from United Kingdom – 27 June 2025 (8/10)

Fantastic location , near to cafes, restaurants, and bars .
Also, near the tram, which took you into the center of town.

  • Darsena Area is Darling! – Greg from United States – 2 June 2025 (8/10)

Senya (probably misspelling her name) is a great and very responsive host and I appreciate her hospitality and care to make sure all things were right and pleasing to us.

This is a good property in a very accessible and interesting neighborhood. The only thing you'd be missing out on is if you did not choose this place.

What could be improved: When it comes to hosting a large group, it would be helpful to have at least two keys, otherwise everyone is dependent on having to manage access and schedules based on one set of keys.

It was clear that competing use in the bathrooms left one bathroom (usually the one extra one rather than the predominate) without hot water for showering.

It's not a deal breaker because it all turned out quite well, but just be aware.

  • Superb – Gillian from Australia – 18 January 2025 (9/10)

Big apartment in a great location. It had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay.

  • Superb – Venkatesh from India – 6 July 2024 (9/10)

The facilities and amenities in the flat..location.

What could be improved: No lift facility. Had to drag our luggage over 2 floors

  • Comfortable spacious 25 minute walk into the very centre of Milan with plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants en route – Mark from United Kingdom – 5 June 2024 (9/10)

    Space

What could be improved: Nothing really

  • Great flat for seeing Milan – it isnt far to walk anywhere or get a bus / underground. – Paul from United Kingdom – 28 May 2024 (8/10)

Great location – Flat was well equipped.

What could be improved: Noisy Neighbours on a couple of occasions – not late at night though.

  • Versatile and spacious, happy with the stay! – Melisa from Costa Rica – 7 November 2023 (8/10)

Nice spacious rooms. Good connections to public transport. Near many restaurants and shopping options. Great spot to start a nice Milan walking route. Clean and very convenient if you want to start slow days with breakfast in.

What could be improved: The sofa was a worn down and its cushions would consistently slide out of it, but we didn't need to use it too much. We also had a lot of mosquitoes, some products to repel them would be great or to improve insulation of the flat.

  • Superb – Anika from United States – 16 October 2023 (9/10)

Great location. Walking distance to everything. The host was great.
